Okay. This is kind of awkward. The automation was deactivated and I have no idea why. Well. At least it was easy to fix I guess?

No, wait, this has happened again and this time the automation is on.

I think I know what's happening: Some days the WiFi connection breaks for a few minutes during the night. The location service was not working for a few weeks because of some network issues. So during these times HA registered both of us as away and set the house state from night to empty and back to occupied when the WiFi connection was back. But the thermostats do not turn on when the house is occupied during the night so they don't flip on for a few minutes when we come home late at night, brush our teeth and go to bed. After that, no event was triggered that could have turned the thermostats on (because there was no state transition).

Without thinking it through a great solution seems to be to return the house back to night during certain hours when no motion is detected anywhere for a few minutes.
