Is your app native or hybrid? Also, which OAuth scopes exactly are you providing? And which version of the Mobile SDK are you using?

Its a native app...i am providing "api" as oauth scope. sdk version 21 and cordova 2.3.

You don't need the consumer secret. Has your connected app been published/installed on the org that you're using? Also, do you have any contacts on the org?

yes it is published....when i run installation url in my browser it says app is installed...yes i do have contacts....when i am running template app, able to get contacts....if i give my consumer key then unable to get contacts...

Have you tried this with the latest version of the Mobile SDK - v2.0.1?
