Funnily enough, I just got an email for a new Prefect release where they also change some things in their path setups. They also use the package's __init__ as the anchor.
They also have a separate __development_base_path__ for the repository's root only available during development. I guess this resolves the question we raised in today's meeting that the repository root is not accessible when installed from pip. But this is still just speculation and needs further investigation.
