Is this when running with py.test -n ${THREADS}
? I believe your original suggestion of using py.test py.test -d --tx ${THREADS}*popen
would fix that issue.

The tests get farmed out to the subprocesses. Afaict, I was occasionally seeing failures because the check for uninitialised was being load-balanced to a subprocess which had already run another test. But I haven't been able to reproduce.

I think the pytest test collection is deterministic, so that shouldn't happen. Let's leave this open until we're more confident it doesn't happen.
