That is the long term goal, yes, but as Item Piles tries to be as system agnostic as possible, different systems handle currency differently. Some systems prefer to treat currency as actual items, so then Item Piles need to be able to split item amounts too, which complicates things.

Makes total sense, of course you could read in the system or have the GM specify, and enable the needed feature were known? 5e is (sadly) pretty dominate though.

+1 for splitting currencies for 5e though. It's pretty prevalent as systems go, so I suspect it'll be used quite a lot!

Came here for the same reason 👍

Also had my first game using loot piles today. Works great for items, but the currency is.... basically worthless without the auto-splitting, as I kept having to say "ok there's 20 gold in there, I'll just manually delete it, and now all of you manually edit your currencies" cos making them all walk up to chests individually to get their loot is a massive time sink unfortunately.

So +2 for currency splitting. Without it I'd have to use lootnpc instead..... (except that doesn't work atm either. Sigh.)

They can't... type in their share of gold?

What is the level of customization you want in the splitting system?

  • Should all players be considered, or only the logged in ones?
  • Should both items and currencies be considered when taking ones share, or just currencies (attributes)?
  • Should any splitting rules be applied to player-created item piles (in this case, the default item pile)?

Avitale34 avatar Avitale34 commented on August 29, 2024

My two cents

  • Preferably all players whether logged in or not
  • I personally only care about currency
  • I think applying to player piles is fine

The same parameters as LootSheetNPC, whatever they happen to be. Off the top of my head -

  • Split to all players is probably the best default, though making it 'logged in players' is fine if its easier, as generally I only play games when everyone is there anyway, and one person missing a few gold is hardly a big deal.

  • Only currency. Items can be grabbed and shared around later if need be (I have item trading in place so people can drag items around without them being duplicated etc).

  • As the rules would be currency only, the 'split gold' button should just always be there if there is any gold in the pile. They would still have the option of 'take all' if they didn't want to split the gold.

I agree, though it might be cool to also be able to split say a pile of healing pots. Probable some other cases.
right now my master looter takes them has to transfer to each other charter.

Keep in mind that "currency" is not a word in Item Piles, as any attribute could theoretically be taken from an item pile - I realize I said that in my question, but "Split Currencies" is not a real thing :D

I can see use cases for things in piles, but tbh I would rarely (if ever) hand out big piles of potions etc. The only thing I can think of which may have a stack, would be arrows/bolts, and its rare that everyone in a party would want some. I think stick with currency for now, as its by far the most important factor.

If its easier, due to your implementation in piles, to make the even-split option available for all items by default, then go for it. I just know that personally I'd only find a use for it with money, but I wouldn't mind having the option.

Haxxer avatar Haxxer commented on August 29, 2024

I could make it settings per item pile, so some item piles could split items and some could split attributes, and some could split both.
