I'm preferring scalatest these days with scalacheck property-based testing

Implement chatroom sessions using Akka Cluster Sharding

For client->server request/response, use akka-http
For server->client events, use WebSockets from akka-http (when available)

Use akka-streams for staging transformations, integrated with akka-http

with sound, popups, email, etc., when a chat message is received

Currently using Java serialization for both akka-persistence and over the wire (both use the akka serialization framework).
Should be able to drop µPickle or scala-pickling into the akka serialization framework.
Note that deserializing a type Any is not a use-case.
However, would prefer to use JSON for over the wire and a binary format for akka-persistence.
For the binary format, could continue to use Java serializiation, or could use scala-pickling if and when it's ready.
It would be nice to use scala-pickling for both JSON and binary serialization. Tried it before and it was too buggy. It's time to try it again.
