I figured out that the reason for this is that the student was not on a team. For a team assignment (and maybe for a non-team assignment) a student needs to explicitly create a team even if they are working by themself. This makes no sense! Team creation should be lazy ... the first operation that requires a team calls a method to create a team for that student.

To be specific, a team (only) needs to be created (i) when a user invites another user to join a team, or (ii) when a user submits work. And of course, a team is only created then if that user doesn't already have a team.

Update: I have updated the view and am working in a fork. This will allow participants to submit their work even if they are not a part of the team. I am trying to work around the teams model and controller to ensure that the assignment is submitted by a "team" and not a "participant" and test it to ensure it does not cause any other issues.
