The Introduction to Mix chapter does this. Maybe we should link to it from the first chapter and add some notes about elixir and elixirc.

Ah, had missed that. Yea I guess that too should go a long way to direct new users to the right information.

That's a very good point. Today the three topics are discussed throughout the guide. We talk about IEx on chapter 1, about compilation on chapter 8 and about Mix on the chapter linked by @ericmj. Thoughts on how to better organize it?

The first chapter of the guide needs to be renamed to something like "Introduction" or "Environment setup". Then a section about using elixir can be added in the end: just mention running a file with elixir script.exs and add a reference to Chapter 8 to learn about elixirc.
