Which generally g++-8 or later, with the exception of Windows which should get g++-8 in April with R 4.0.0 and new Rtools.

You could try one of the older RcppTOML releases from https://cloud.r-project.org/web/checks/check_results_RcppTOML.html which should help you with basic parsing.

We made one later change which required a backport of some formating or outputing help into the older g++-4.9.* even as I recall (possibly only on Windows). There may also have been an upstream change -- I don't recall. My system has g++-9 as the default now... (Ubuntu 19.10).
