That function was changed to be non-recursive already in October 2007 and since June 2008 it's not even iterative anymore (should be almost constant or at most logarithmic time now). You must be using a really old version of the blog plugin.

Sorry!!! Yes, it's from 2007. I wonder why. Our dokuwiki installation is from December 2012 ...

No problem and I have no idea where you've got that version from, I couldn't find any (obvious) download link which points to such old versions.
