This gave me another idea, made a quick mockup of it
from dwl.

why the dwm logo is great
What the dwm logo achieves:
- overlapping letters could imply that the project is relatively compact
- one single solid shape
- one single executable no config file
- robust
- bitmap:
- small in size (project and logo)
- also reproducible with UTF-8 characters
- modular: pixels can be rearranged and added (just like its code)
- sharp edges could imply that the project follows a stricter set of rules
What the dwm logo does not archive:
- describe what dwm the window manager does (but ... the name does that)
(the dwl logo on discord does that)
Other ideas
suckless style programs allow you to be quite creative (simple base but near endless conf. possibilities), hence it might be a good idea to create a logo that is similar to the one wterm has.
(Maybe there are some UTF-8 char. that have such a shape)
PS: dwc does not seem to be used at least not in any notable wayland projects
from dwl.
I like how @paperbenni was using the yellow background to imply that it's for wayland, just my 2c
from dwl.
I'm not a pro but I tried some simple idea
from dwl.
In my opinion the general layout from discord logo is the best since it clearly shows what dwl is about but I think it needs some tweaks. If someone could make a few variants it'd be great.

Still stick with @paperbenni idea, I just can't get it out of my head :|
Just the same, but with wayland's logo color.

This is awesome, I second this all the way!

Gotta start somewhere! π

was just gonna suggest that π

I second this. Also, nice job on the mockup. I'd suggest to use this as the logo and be done with it.

couple of examples. although I feel like none of them work well.

@notthewave IMHO this on the right is the best and nicely corresponding to dwm π₯

problem: lower case, capital, capital
from dwl.
or or rename: dwc (dynamic wayland compositor) but I believe dwc is already reserved
from dwl.
I guess the thing I'm hesitant about with this approach is that it is so similar that it seems to imply some connection to the official dwm project. (Maybe that's just me?) What if we change up the style slightly?
Compresses well too:
_

___| , , | |
/ , | | |/
L__.|__|__|./ L/

oooh i like this one

i second @paperbenni 's mockup, with a few fixes (the L isnt properly connected to the rest of the logo)
from dwl.
I think that dwl logo should be simple i.e. no round edges because it should show that it's a rough and simple thing just like dwm. Using yellow (which shade is an open discussion) color somewhere in logo is a good idea because of wayland. Your logo looks good but I can't feel suckless vibe in it.
Also I'd consider adding some "roots" like tree has roots (if possible of course). It'd show that it's based on wlroots. But it has to be simple too.
