Works for me. I have the latest evil installed, and even if I add (evil-mode) before or after (global-diff-hl-mode), I don't see this error.

Emacs 24.3.50.3 (built from a branch that'll eventually become 24.4).

Can you find out exactly what's causing your problem? Maybe start Emacs with --debug-init?

Ok, i was just being an idiot...

When i commented out evil mode, it was actually crashing because something later on was trying to use one of the mode maps, and that what was letting diff-hl load. Turns out, years ago, I turned off the fringe (set-fring-style -1) since I wasnt using it for anything, and totally forgot about it. THATS what was generating the mysterious error.

Sorry for wasting your time, if anyone else complains about the read-only thing, check to make sure their fringe is actually on
