They found that that for their problem a well-tuned M–H worked better. The claim is that most of the proposals fell outside of the prior boundaries and that re-parameterization didn't help. They only managed an acceptance fraction of 5% in ~75 dimensions. I'm not too sure why this happened but it'd be good to look into some more.
