Oh, hey, fixed it myself..
standalone pages as opposed to say, a directory full of blog entries, really want to be standalone markdown files in the top level content directory. This was not obvious to me after many re-readings of the Quickstart guide - which only talks about creating "posts" under a subdir. I'm probably grumping in the wrong place about what I see as a documentation issue.
So I had created:
hugo new contact/index.md
(and I also tried contact/contact.md)
Which created content/contact/index.md and content/contact/contact.md respectively.
As opposed to the expected:
content/contact.md
Oops.
As soon as I named it right, all was well.
This also solved a series of other woes I was having with pages I wanted to be standalone showing up with "older" and "newer" links and dates and crap I didn't want.
