While I've been a big fan of using DEBUG for compilers and things, here might want to give this a name more obscure/specific than DEBUG since we are executing inside another application we may conflict with. That is, even if you don't need it now, you may want to eventually access this value from inside LD_PRELOADed code inside the app.
