Could you try curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf -L https://install.determinate.systems/nix/pr/587 | sh -s -- install when the CI on #587 finishes? That should reduce the behavior to a warning. Let me know if it works better for you? (I'd love to see the output from your system's automation, too!)

The good news is your install should still work (provided you don't revert), however your sh shell profile may not be set up correctly. Your bash shell etc may pick up nix fine. (If not, /nix/nix-installer uninstall and please report back)

is there any way to avoid this error in the future? I end up re-installing nix frequently (and automatically) due to some wonkiness with the infra I have to use
