Honestly, I don't know what was wrong here.
I fixed my problem by comparing my site to another project that happened to have its source open: https://github.com/3DSIM/software-engineering-blog (Thanks, @3DSIM ). In my special case it was that in my header I had: author = "Kaligule" when I should have had author = "kaligule" (lowercase).
After that I came back here to post my solution, just to find that the example code I had written works fine and shows an avatar.
Whatever, it is fixed now (by seemingly never being broken).
