Just glomming on here to report this issue as well. I'm running emacs-snapshot v24.2.50.1 on Ubuntu 12.04.

It seems, I find the solution:
rm -fr ~/.emacs.d/var/pcache/gh
Restart Emacs.

Please try again with gist.el 1.1.1 (and gh.el 0.7.2)
anyway, highly likely a duplicate of #33.
