What Ruby version? Can you give some system information?

I'm 99.9% certain it's the Ruby version your running. I was under the impression that Chef > 10 was not supported on Ruby 1.8, but I could be wrong. This example is workin for me on 1.9.3.

OK, moving to 1.9 seemed to solve that. FYI, opscode set up instructions still specify 1.8.7 with SSL as the default. You might want to note that this needs 1.9 on your cook book entry. I found another problem I will note as a separate issue. Thanks for your help and your prompt response.
