what's up with check_env checking for the .env.example file though??? Should it be checking .env and throw an error if it doesn't exist?

Yep, we saw some issues around that!

Using .env.example is an easy way to have a master definitions file for the necessary environment variables. check_env uses .env.example to see which variables to check for, and makes sure that they're present at runtime in the ENV hash. If the .env file is missing or incomplete, the initializer will throw an error when trying to access ENV[:var].

ahhh...I see...so when I renamed .env.example to .env (instead of copying it to a new file) I screwed everything up :) May want to reconsider making a seemingly throw-away file a hard dependency for the app to function!
