An alternative might be possible with dotnet-script. It's not specifically for building and instead is for generic scripting, but that might make things easier to maintain since the project doesn't need any complex building behavior.

Another alternative are NUKE builds. Seems to be a middle-ground choice between Cake and dotnet-script. Looks very promising.

AppVeyor has issues with test fail detection with multiple target frameworks. A better build process using one of the above choices is definitely needed.
