inserting/modifying whole objects is currently only supported by using parameters/placeholders which is not possible with our crate shell crash
nor with the admin-ui console. maybe thats your problem? all current client implementations(java/python/ruby/nodejs) are supporting it.

Right.. I was using the shell trying to work out how everything worked before I bothered making a script to use it. The thought to try it in Python did cross my mind, but I just figured the shell should work so if my syntax is wrong there then it'd be wrong in an Python too.

see here for an example how to pass values as arguments to the python client: https://crate.io/docs/clients/python/client.html#selecting-some-data.
E.g. inserting a python dict:
cursor.execute("INSERT INTO test (object_column) values (?)", ({'my_col': 1, ...}))

I see. Thanks.
