Maybe we can:

• By default display the expected balance (taking into account the unconfirmed transactions) and put in brackets the real balance.
• Prevent a transaction with an error message if the expected balance is not sufficient.

This is what happens in bitcoinqt: Balance decreases as soon as the transaction is broadcasted, even if it is never confirmed (eg due to insufficient fee).
That said, I do not know if it's not too complicated to do. A temporary solution may be put in brackets the expected balance and put in red transactions potentially denied.
