Sorry for the delay on this. Anyway, the problem here is in the find_with_ids there is a call to ids.compact! which removes the nil values. Thus you get the error message above. Here is the code:

    # Normalize incoming data.  Note the last arg can be nil.  Happens
    # when find is called with nil options which is then passed on
    # to find_with_ids.
    ids.compact!

So fixing this bug will break a lot of searches. Thus unforunately, I can't fix this. Luckily the workaround is easy, just pass in an array like you have discovered.
