Is it possible to add a field into the product attribute JSON to specifiy the type of the value which can be used by a JSON mapper?

Yes, that is the one I meant that could be put in.

There won't be type hints, so we could try to store JsonNode in the Attribute class and try the mapping at the time the caller requests the product attribute.

• for primitive types it should return an Optional if the value is absent and throw an error if the type can't be mapped
• for set attributes it still returns an empty set for empty values
