Currently is there any implementation that allows for a custom query that skips over SilverStripe records where column does NOT contain a value?

For example, I would like to write a query that gets the four most recent records whose series column does not equal undefined/null/nil/etc.

Something like this:
/api/messages?date__sort=DESC&series__isEmpty=false&__limit[]=4

unfortunately this might not work at the minute, since only filter() is implemented. But looking at the SS doc https://docs.silverstripe.org/en/3.4/developer_guides/model/searchfilters/ seems there is also a :not filter, but not sure if it works without the main filter... so maybe try: api/messages?series__not=null
