The original intention of the colour coding was to portray difficulty, green was beginner, yellow was intermediate, and red was advanced. You can see this with the class names being .beg, .int, and .adv.

I also intended to add a key so people other than me would understand this arbitrary division :-P That said it doesn't really work in it's current state and I'm open to new classifications, or perhaps scraping the classifications altogether (though I worry that will make the UI rather bland), am I right in thinking that your above classification is based loosely on length of the solutions?

It's more about time required to come up with a solution. More lengthy solutions require more time, so it's possible that these correspond to lengths.
