It's probably best to follow http://semver.org in general, but mostly it's about picking a start version (some pick 0.1.0, others 1.0.0) at a commit where you're comfortable to call things stable and then bumping that occasionally by pushing a new tag when you feel a set of changes require that (so a new version with added features or general improvements might now be 1.1.0 or a bugfix release might be 1.0.1).

INAppStoreWindow has a v1.x scheme going on: https://github.com/indragiek/INAppStoreWindow/tags

TwUI is using 0.x.0 for its releases: https://github.com/github/twui/tags

For my purposes, I'm happy with any scheme that looks and works the best for you.
