I absolutely agree, we can definitely improve things here. My first suggestion would be to provide improved error messages in the test results and the test step, where the error occured. The line numbers are tough business, but we can have a look at this, too.

Improved error reporting in latest 1.1-SNAPSHOT version so exceptions get logged more significant. I made sure that exception messages go into test result overview as well as surefire reports. Also added the failing test step and (very proud of it) the line numbers in the test. See example below:
