Not sure what the plan is yet. Gyp was considered and the abandoned. The ekr1 branch has an early version of that. I see a couple other ways that might work.

Take a look at how Firefox is built on windows, we might be able to re-use the mozilla_build setup they use for that. This is essentially make which uses whichever Visual Studio you have.

Shorter-term we could make one VS solution that makes the same build targets in the same places an the new Makefile. Ideally it would be a VS2008 solution that could be upgraded by the newer VS2010-2013 versions without error. This would give us fewer vcproj files to update.

I'm certainly open to other ideas as well here.

I guess this can be considered closed now? All platforms can be built using the same make-based build system, and the number of sln/vcproj files has been reduced to the minimum, which can be upgraded by the newer MSVC versions.
