Thanks for reporting!
Mmh, maybe it would make sense to be able to set a global ipv6 "disable" flag in an attribute as a workaround.

If someone else has this problem, please +1.

I was thinking about maybe delegating that to an attribute, which would be [4, 6] by default.

Then, the recipe can use the attribute, and people who use that recipe are in charge of setting the attribute correctly.

What do you think?

I agree that this is a valid scenario.
In case you already implemented an attribute, feel free to file a pull request.

I'd suggest the following:

default['iptables-ng']['enabled_ip_versions'] = [4, 6]
