History
The original name as used by security researchers Karsten and Luca at SRLabs is "Catcher-Catcher" when running on the Motorola C123. I then came up with he suggestion to use accomplish the same for Android but needed a new name. Privately I called it "CaTrap", which sound good and also refers to the functionality of being an "(IMSI) Catcher Trap" but never used that in public, since there is a Nintendo GameBoy game with the same name. But who gives a fcuk about Nintendo!?

Obviously I still like this name for its simplicity, but on the other hand "AIMSICD" sound more conservative, academic and corporate, so it may be easier to find funding and non-public support for such a project, than for something that sound like a game. But then again, this is mainly an Open Source crowd funded project, so any funding, if any, will probably come from donations.

So yes, we're still looking for a catchy (!) name.

@E3V3A, this "CaTrap" doesn't really cut it for me. I cannot relate anything to it and it isn't catchy enough. On the other side "AIMSICD" (pronounced "I'm-Sick-D") is much more catchy and memorable.

What do you think, @He3556? And you, @SgtObst - do you have a suggestion much more related to our Apps functionality? 😄 In my eyes it's not a must to find a "better" name. Our project has already been featured under the term "AIMSICD" on a few websites - and have you had a google with "AIMSICD" yet, @E3V3A? You'll be surpised what pops up! It's certainly unique. And people who know its name use it.

I don't get the "CaTrap" neither. Some people understand "catcher" or "catcher trap". But it's hard to find a name, everybody would understand. i am still thinking...

@He3556, maybe we should think a little "out of the box"? How about something like this:

  • IdentProtect (as in protection of phone identity)
  • IMSIcure (pronounced "I'm-Secure")
  • Catch-Me-If-You-Can (short: "CMIYC") - inspired by the movie!
  • Don't-Catch-Me (short: "DCM")
  • Warn-Before-You-Catch (short: "WBYC")
  • GoSpyElsewhere ("GSE")
  • VANisher (thinking of IMSI-Catchers built into vans)

Generally speaking, I like AIMSICD best. The project grew with that name, I'm very happy with it.

I like AIMSICD but I really like @SecUpwN 's suggestion of IMSIcure (I'm Secure) that has a nice ring to it :)

@xLaMbChOpSx, hey, you just discovered my secret favourite! 😃
Whatcha think about IMSIcure ("I'm-Secure"), @E3V3A?

He3556 avatar He3556 commented on June 6, 2024

I like the IMSIcure - i would read it as "a cure for my IMSI", but it's still the best name I can think of.

While catchy, just the name of IMSIcure could lead users into a false sense of security. Whatever this app is called, it should be made clear that the app does not guarantee that IMSI catchers will always be detected and flagged. IMSIcure is otherwise good, but I wonder if a name that more accurately describes the risk of false negatives could be found. Perhaps something that leverages the honey pot meme, since it is essentially a honey pot detector. HPD has its own ring and brings benefits if you happen to live in a town or city that starts with the letter H. IMSCI-V for vaccination perhaps? This sort of creativity is not my strong suit, there are many other possibilities.

@xLaMbChOpSx @SecUpwN
I bow down to IMSIcure! :) (But I also like VANisher.)

@rjh427 We're covering those false-sense-of-security issues with regular and clear messages both during install and occasionally during use. You'll probably see it sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.

Ok, it's great to see everyone liking my suggestion of "IMSIcure" (feel free to drop your personal favourite suggestion, @rjh427). My revamp of the GitHub-README is overdue, but I would like to commit the changes once I have a new and secure mail address (Secure-Mail.biz SUCKS BALLS)! So please stay patient everyone. In the meantime, drop me a PM with secure mail provider suggestions!

EDIT: Alternative short name has been added with my revamp of the README: 2d16908
