I meant to respond to this before. I did start looking into it.
It boils to down to a thorny issue that can't be fully resolved in C++03 (because of the untyped NULL problem).
It looks like I will have accept a warning if compiling at high warning levels (but at least it will compile).
I'll try to finish off what I have been doing and get it in shortly.
In the meantime I believe you can just write the expression without the == NULL.

Just got back to this.
I aborted my previous investigation as it was taking me down an increasingly more complex series of workarounds!
Just looked again and the specific case here seems to be addressed by adding a couple of compare() overloads to the evaluators.
At least my own reproduction of this issue now compiles are runs correctly.
I believe there are still some more int/ ptr compare issues I need to iron out - but for now I think this issue can be closed.
