The issue is resolved by adding :
compile("org.camunda.bpm.extension:camunda-bpm-spring-boot-starter:1.1.0") {
exclude module: 'spring-tx'
compile('org.springframework:spring-tx:4.2.5.RELEASE')
by Default "org.camunda.bpm.extension:camunda-bpm-spring-boot-starter:1.1.0" contains
org.springframework:spring-tx:3.x', which will not work with spring boot
from camunda-bpm-spring-boot-starter.

the starter does not force special spring versions ... in a maven pom we import the spring-boot-dependencies BOM and use the versions specified by the spring-boot version we chose. I do not know how this works in gradle, maybe you can provide some documentation?
