->dump() is deprecated/old. Try and use ->log() instead which should group them 
properly.

Yeah, using ->log() did the trick! Thanks Christoph :)

So, for anyone else, this is what my above example looks like now:

$firephp->group('test group');
$firephp->log($var1, 'var1');
$firephp->log($var2, 'var2');
$firephp->groupEnd();
