Yeah, I don't think there's really anything you can do besides actually defining it in your environment. Sorry!

@bkeepers looks like you can declare require 'dotenv' ; Dotenv.load
at the top of your Gemfile. It might not work the first time when you try to bundle gem 'dotenv'
itself... not sure. But in my testing after that stage everything is working.

@arronmabrey FYI that secret key will end up in your Gemfile.lock
unless you add that file to your .gitignore

Yep, I ran into this recently and stumbled upon this Gist and ended up using a custom Heroku build-pack per the PR in the comments. This is not a huge win but it works in the Heroku case.
