The second part of this ticket has been resolved by commit ad8cec5. Leaving this ticket open still for the first part (automatically refreshing client sessions periodically)

Reverted changes from c481205 since they didn't actually work with asyncio (they weren't being awaited). c481205 has introduced session refreshing, defaulting to every 3 minutes, and also the auth object will close the session when it encounters connection errors, which are the most likely errors to be left uncaught. If the error is caught, the session will be automatically create a new session anyway so no harm.
This ticket can now be considered done.
