Contrary to my deeply held belief, fetching the bounding rect at rapid-fire pace actually seems quite performant, on desktop and mobile (we may want to test this on a less powerful device to see if there's a difference). For now, that seems to be the solution that will make the most sense. Incidentally, we won't need the resize observer for this anymore (though it's still useful for element size queries for styles).
