Hm.. seems like my hopes about webpack 2 just "fixing everything" weren't yet accurate (though that may be patched soon here?
I have one other thing to try...

Ok so turns out I was partially wrong. Adding properties to module.exports can be interpreted as a named export by Babel so we're ok for now. In the future when browsers have good support for modules we'll want to drop this and switch to ES exports, though. In the meantime it's safe to switch all non-top-level files to using export default.
