^ is a field terminator, while LF is a message terminator.
CR has no special significance. ^ is never used to terminate
a message, although it is often found immediately preceding
a LF terminator. ^ is also never interpreted literally; it's
always a field terminator, so player names should not
contain this character. I've just added some code to CVS to
strip carets from player names, although carets in other
text fields would probably also do very bad things. (You
should, however, only be able to screw up your own client
and server now, rather than other clients attached to the
same server as you.)

If I ever break the network compatibility, those evil carets
will be the first thing to go. ;)

P.S. I'll rewrite the section of protocol.html that appears
to have misled you.
