I can confirm the same issue, its only on iOS.
This might also be related but I've seen the images only load as low resolution (i.e. very blurry) even when zooming in.

For me this issue seems to appear less frequently when using lower resolution images. So workaround could be using srcset via custom attributes to display such images for mobile.

So is this issue a problem with Safari? (I believe other iOS browsers internally use Safari).

Having a separate set of images for small devices a bit heavy of a workaround.
