Perhaps something similar methods like Firefox recipes have?

Site http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

has direct link:
http://get.videolan.org/vlc/2.1.0/macosx/vlc-2.1.0.dmg

Found out that there is also a site with directory structures here:
http://get.videolan.org:81
http://get.videolan.org:81/vlc/2.1.0/macosx/

From URL:
http://get.videolan.org:81/vlc/last/macosx/vlc-2.1.0.dmg

refers to:
The document has moved here

So the URL provider mechanism should be able to follow redirects in this case.

Since it's not yet clear:

  1. That the VLC folk won't update the Sparkle feed, and
  2. What the "correct" non-Sparkle approach might be

..my inclination is to do nothing at the current time.

Perhaps we ought to reach out to the VLC folks and ask. Indeed the 2.1 version still uses an SUFeed, presumably that'll be updated at some point.

I just sent an email to [email protected]. Archives are here: http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/vlc-devel/ (if they publish my non-subscribed email, that is).

Someone got back from the vlc-devel list:

On 30 Sep, Jesse Peterson wrote :
Currently the VLC Sparkle feed on the Mac is still distributing version 2.0.8. When is it planned to release 2.1 via the Sparkle feed?

Probably when 2.1.1 is out, or when someone fixes the 10.6 runtime issue.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf

I guess there's a 10.6 runtime issue. I'd consider this GH issue closed then. Here are potential VLC tickets:

Sorry that I didn't see this issue until now, but when 2.1 came out I asked the developers about the Sparkle feed. They didn't want to update the feed until they were satisfied with the quality of the 2.1 release, so it's a good thing they waited.
