My original intent with putting the directories where they are is that they, and the files kept in them, are real, resolvable URLs that fit with the rest of Scalar's virtual, page URL scheme, e.g., http://my-domain.com/my-book/media/my-file.jpg is "real" and plays ball with a virtual page such as http://my-domain.com/my-book/my-page.

That said, there's no really good reason the directories couldn't exist elsewhere. They'd have to live under the book URL segment, though (http://my-domain.com/my-book) otherwise it would bork Scalar's URL processing. So if they were kept elsewhere, I think they'd still need to have the same (or similar) URL reference. I need to think about this.

Did you have something specific in mind? Offloading the images to another HD?

In my specific use case I want all the files that need to be backed up in one place (and right now it's in with a bunch of stuff that doesn't need to be backed up).

It's also causing some issues with mounting.
