It is looking like a bug in the microsoft.ad.object module. The microsoft.ad.group module works just fine.

and as i just typed that i tried something else (adding the ansible_winrm_kerberos_delegation set to true), this is now working. so looks like you MUST use kerb for this function. Another issue that i needed to work through was getting kerb to work. If you are using the config below, everything after the @ needs to be uppercased.
ansible_connection: winrm
ansible_user: [email protected]
ansible_password: "{{ WIN_PASSWORD }}"
ansible_port: 5985
ansible_winrm_kerberos_delegation: true
