As for the issue, what is the problem? I can see that you've not supplied the 
right permissions for files despite saying you have. Also, you say it doesn't 
use vQmod but it must do, or another vQmod you're using is trying to edit it. 
Check your vQmod log file for errors

Problem is that the module won't show up in the module menu because of the 
error.

I've contacted the maker of the module he tells me this:

"I have not come across this kind of error before and it seems to be coming 
from the vqMod file. Maybe contact the vqMod creator and ask about the error 
message it is creating.

I'm not sure if this matters or not (as I don't use the vqmod system) but the 
module is not a vqMod it is a traditional OpenCart module."

As for what the Vqmod error log file: it's empty.....

And as far as permissions: I've given the correct permissions as top 
administrator in Opencart.

Your permissions aren't right, that's what the error is clearly telling you. 
Your web server user doesn't have permission to read it. Make sure that the 
parent folder has access too
