I agree. It's something that has always gnawed at me, but has not annoyed me enough to remove it.

I have also been trying to get to a stable 'version', other than 0.0.0. This seemed to be a good idea for a version bump.

Although, now that I think about it, we could just as easily inspect the element at link time and add the svg element if it is not present?

Probably so, but I would probably just make a clean break from the old implementation. As long as the change is mentioned in the release/upgrade notes (and docs updated), it shouldn't be a big deal. Considering that the project is still fairly young (as you note about the stable version), I'd think you could make the change without much pain to many users. Conversely, if you allow for both, that's code cruft that you will have to carry & support from here on out.

However, I've never really run a project like this, and so I may not be the best source here :)
