I can also leave the RTD as they are. It would be a good idea then to change the link in the readme to the new docs (if they are ready) :)

If #1042 is accepted, I can take a next step to gen up API docs from the annotations. My preferred system for this is mkdocs and mkdocstrings, but I can probably pick up whatever already exists to update it if a rehaul isn't preferred.

To keep everything in one place maybe we can use github pages instead and for now use the old readthedocs as reference for structure (and ofc copy any information that is still valid) ?
