Violent crime is slightly increasing in the United States. Some metropolitan areas are accounting for this increase more than others. In this paper, we explore the 474 distinct neighborhoods in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area as a case study to better understand the recent rising crime rates and to predict future rates. The study used Decision Tree and K Nearest Neighbor machine learning models to produce the crime predictions and general time series model ARIMA for trend analysis. We found that indicators of transportation, housing, and the environment were all consistent predictors of crime in the C-M area. We provide policy suggestions for community-leaders and local politicians to counteract the increased crime rates in their community.
