I think that I directional particle needs to be expressed if the direction is semantically releveant, unless it is already explicitly covered by the verb frame.
So the "up" in "eat up" is covered by eat-02 and the "down" in "sit down" is covered by sit-02.
But the "back" in "come back" is not covered by come-01. We have at times, if available, used other verb frames that fully cover a phrasal verb not directly covered in OntoNotes, such as return-01 for "come back".

One of my students raised this issue with "drive in" (e.g., "My parents drove in for Thanksgiving"). I vote for :direction (i2 / in)
or similar.

Agreed that this is not covered by drive-XX alone. ":direction (i2 / in)" seems okay to me, though this gives reasoning engines yet another thing they aren't expecting :) The sentence really seems to mean "arrived by driving", so another idea would be to use those predicates.
