Going off of my previous comment, I took a look at this again from what I was describing before.

It appears that AirMessage is somehow seeing contacts like the following:

John Smith
Mobile: 555-555-5555
WhatsApp: (555) 555-5555
Duo: 1-555-555-5555

If I go ahead and unlink the “Accounts” for whatsapp and Duo for that contact, it eliminates these duplicate numbers. Which essentially were causing multiple message threads for me.

Not sure if there’s a better way of parsing the contacts to avoid this account linking stuff. As, even if I unlink say the Duo account with a contact. If I open up Duo and call them using it or tap on their contact it automatically re-links it.

Do you receive the message twice in the notifications area, or does the message only show up twice in the conversations list?

The messages show up twice in the conversation list, but I only get notified once.

Occasionally duplicate messages will appear in the app message feed after sending a single message.

Chiming in here as well since I run into this all the time.

I happen to get a lot of duplicate messages for multiple contacts like described. I noticed that sometimes when sending a message to a contact it will be the following:

555-123-6789
or
5551236789

And choosing one of the ones above, will send it to the correct conversation / message. But, sending to the other will result in the message being sent on the CORRECT conversation but duplicating it and not working in another conversation. Very odd. I'll also note that my contacts are pretty consistent and cleaned up so I'm not sure where these discrepancies and duplicate numbers are occurring as they aren't in my contact. Not sure where they're being pulled from.

You might try editing the contact and adding the 1 or better +1. Then the number will be identical.
